I do know the feelings you're experiencing. Many years ago I was charged €90 to go from the Westin Excelsior to FCO and being that I was running late to catch my flight I merely said 'tu sei criminale' over and over and paid him. And I'm STILL kicking myself that I didn't get a policeman...
But you're in Rome now - and as these things go, you got off pretty easy - so enjoy your trip! (But do book a car service for your return - or take the train).
